Build Your Career Super Powers
Building a career can be done so many ways. Let’s focus on a method called career clicking.
Career clicking can be simply viewed as clicking with a coworker.
You might think career clicking is when you and your coworkers are in a fantasy football league. Or maybe you just went out for happy hour on Tuesday after Susan organized it. Maybe your manager Fred started a ping pong tournament and that’s how you all spent Thursday afternoon.
Those activities are good, but career clicks are something deeper. Let’s break it down with a few examples.
Times When You Click
When we say career clicks right now, we are referring to the times where you really click with someone. I was just talking to someone a few weeks ago for the first time, and he was telling me about his relationship with my grandfather. It was one of the first times I’ve heard about my grandfather’s professional life through the eyes of someone who worked with him in different areas. That clicked. Every time I think of that person, I will think of what he told me about my grandfather. And every time he thinks of me (if he didn’t already) he may think of what he appreciated about my grandfather. It makes our conversations and relationships come alive.
In the same way, there’s a coworker, Brian, in St. Louis, and he was sharing that he grew up there. Very cool. What’s cooler is that I told him I know of three things about St Louis - The Arch, 1st Phorm and the Frisellas, and that it gets super hot in the summer. He responds by saying he knows the Frisellas - personally. Amazing. Click. I won’t forget that. Each time Brian and I talk about St. Louis or being “home,” I’ll remember the special aspects of where he lives.
These career clicks are things we can build. We just need to uncover them. If you’ve ever met my mom’s side of the family, there are specialties when it comes to food. For my aunt Teresa, she’s an incredible chef and used to have her own Italian restaurant; for my aunt Jenny she makes amazing pies, for my mom it’s baking anything but pies, and for my grandmother it’s anything with fresh vegetables from the garden, be it soups or chicken pot pie, for example.
With this, when in conversation with any of them, if you were talking to Jenny and brought up pies, it probably wouldn’t be hard to observe her excitement for the topic. At that point, we need to have something equally exciting and powerful to share regarding pies. What about pies is memorable for you? Did you try making 10 different types of pies at once for thanksgiving last year? That’s memorable. Maybe your child had their first pie and rather than eating it they gave it to the dog! That’s memorable also. Those are clicks.
I have a coworker who has always had a passion for mission work and for foster care. We got hired at the same time, and it came up that I was going on a mission trip to Africa (which I did in June). Additionally, when we talked about family, she learned that I became a husband at the same time I became a father. Click. A few days ago, she thanked me for my help on a project and sent me an Amazon gift card, “buy something for your son,” she said.
If all we talked about was work or just went to happy hour or just spent time in the office, that depth of connection would not be possible or exist. No matter where we both go professionally in the next 5, 10, or 15 years, as long as we maintain the relationship, this career click will be there. She’ll remember my heart and character because of the conversations we’ve had and passions we shared.
Many clients become friends over the years. One client from North Carolina who was a huge Duke fan sent Duke baby clothes when people at the company had children. He was a super hard worker and never took vacations. We convinced him of the importance of vacations, and he came to see us. We also visited him, and he made sure we saw the top 10 things to see in Raleigh/Durham. Visiting Duke was naturally one of them. Duke is a click for us.
Another client is a pharmacist who loves yacht races and supports Make-A-Wish San Diego. Each year she supports the team in a day of adventure which is modeled after the TV show "The Amazing Race." There are a variety of team challenges on both bikes and boats followed by a great party with awesome raffle prizes, auction items, food and music at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. Yachts and Make-A-Wish are clicks for me with her. It’s also on my bucket list to attend.
We do business with people we trust and people we know.
Get to know people on a deeper level with clicks, and your relationships will be stronger, your business will be better, and it will build your career super powers.
Thank you for reading.
Wishing you beauty and joy, kindness and compassion, and great career super powers.
