When we think of Super Heroes, it brings to mind muscular men and women in tight spandex suits and capes. These people have X-ray vision, superhuman strength and other super powers. Rarely do these super heroes have powers related to their intellect. But . . . they should, and so should you. Intellectual super powers are some of the best powers you can build. Learn 3 ways to build them.
If you are in school, you are served new information daily. You are developing your intellectual super powers every day. Some of our readers are in college - kudos to my daughter and my high school friend who retired and went back to school to be a nurse!
For the rest of us, education should not stop after we graduate. How much and how fast are you growing and learning? How many books or articles do you read? How many seminars or courses do you take yearly?
Read Something Different
I like to alternate between business books and pleasure books, with spiritual reading sprinkled in. My son, Harrison, reads about 100 books a year, so he is my go-to for reading recommendations. I asked him for one on branding, and it took him 3 seconds to make a recommendation. A book on pitching to investors? It took him 2 seconds. Ask for a recommendation in the comments, and I’m sure he will oblige.
As a writer, I find it important to read a lot. It helps me understand other styles and improve mine. One of my favorite bloggers scans all the day’s news and sends out a daily six-point newsletter summarizing the day events. It’s called Nextdraft by Dave Pell for those who are interested.
The latest three books I am reading are Pitch Anything, Praying Circles Around the Lives of Your Children, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Would love to talk about them with anyone interested. Other great reads are The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and the New Yorker. Read something different and open up your mind.
According to BrainHQ, intellectual wellness is “an active pursuit of working towards an optimal intellectual state. It can include being open to new ideas, thinking critically, expanding your knowledge and skills, exposing yourself to new ideas, people, and beliefs, discovering more about yourself and your potential, being open to different perspectives, and fostering creativity.” That’s a lot to unpack.
Be Open to New People and Ideas
One thing we could use more of with intellectual wellness is openness to other people and ideas. We recently saw the Elvis movie. I had categorically placed Elvis in the eccentric singer category along with Liberace. This was done solely due to the capes he wore as part of his costume. The movie explained Elvis was a fan of Marvel characters, so as a child, he used to wear a lightning bolt around his neck and a cape on his back. Marvel characters have remained popular over many years and currently continue to break movie box office records. I realize my thinking was limited, and Elvis was not eccentric but actually like me because I like Marvel movies too. Being curious and asking questions are small steps to stay open.
The James Webb telescope has captured pictures of other galaxies. The possibilities and the sheer unknown of space are a great topic to expand your intellect. Consider the fact that the galaxies are still growing, and we know very little about them. What can you learn about the Cartwheel Galaxy and the Phantom Galaxy? We knew about the Cartwheel Galaxy from the Hubble Telescope, but the Webb telescope can detect infrared light, basically seeing through the dust that was obstructing our view. Learn more. Now, we can uncover new insights. Where in your life can you change how you view things and discover something new?
Foster Creativity
Dale Carnegie offers training on how to build creativity in the workplace. They offer 10 drivers that correlate with innovative organizations. One driver is your network. We get ideas and inspiration talking to others at all stages of life.
The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. - Steve Jobs
Daily walking is known to spark creativity. Sometimes solutions will find you when on a walk. Problems you had been struggling with now seem simple.
What are some new things you can do to improve your intellectual state? Put on your cape, go for a walk and build your intellectual super powers!
Thank you for reading.
