Podcasts date back to the 1980s when they were known as audioblogs. Fast forward to 2000, and on-demand radio shows and podcasts increased in popularity. Now you can find them on whatever platform you favor, and my favorite is YouTube.
There are three common threads that shine through in the interviews I’ve heard about career success:
Successful people are doing something different than other people
Success and abundance are all for naught if your inner self is not at peace
Service and significance are foundational to success
Do Something Different
Successful people are doing something different than other people. What are those things?
Anticipate
There are many answers to what successful people do differently. One thing that stands out is humility. Another is the ability to spot trends, or as Wayne Gretzky was famous for saying, he skates to where the puck is going to be. Anticipating and being in the right place can set you up for success.
Get It to 80%
Successful people take immediate and decisive action. They don’t wait for the perfect time. It is said many good ideas are laying in the planning graveyard. If you wait until you think it is ready, it will either be too late, or it will never happen. It’s like a painting. A painting is never finished. It ends at an interesting place. Get your idea to 80% and get it out there fast.
Don’t talk about it, be about it. - Bob Burns
Inner Peace
On Jay Shetty’s Podcast, Lewis Howes talks about his book Unlocking the Power of Your Mind for Success and Abundance. The one-hour interview was overflowing with golden nuggets. See which ones resonate with you and then listen to the entire podcast if you’re craving more.
You can be successful on the outside but if your inner emotional state is suffering, you are losing. - Lewis Howes
“Externally successful. Internal suffering. No one wants to suffer. Take a moment and assess where you are at on the inner peace and self-love scale. If you are low on the scale, you haven’t dealt with your inner stuff.
There is a healing journey that goes on inside of you that needs to be ongoing. It is a daily practice to undertake. Keep practicing and integrating the healing journey and strive for peace.
You can’t buy peace. You’ve got to own it. Create peace in your life by stepping into the fear, by owning the fear, accepting that it will happen potentially but choosing to proceed anyway.
The emotional side of healing your heart is the game. If your inner emotional state is at peace and focused on service (even the people in your life), then you are successful.
Howes encourages you to identify the place where you feel the most powerless. Do this by listing all your fears. Then turn the main fear into a Super Power. Find someone, model or mentor you can learn from and act on the fear repeatedly until it is a super power you can tuck into your toolbelt.
And keep enjoying life along the way.”
Service and Significance
Lewis Howes continued in the podcast with these thoughts.
“Have a season of overcoming your fears. But still be in service to the people you are working with. That is just as much service as feeding the homeless, changing the world or curing cancer. Greatness is about changing the world around you and the world within you and being in the evolution of change and transformation.
What is your meaningful mission? What is your purpose? Why were you put on this earth? Who are you serving?”
To be truly successful, be in the mode of service and have a higher vision.
On a separate podcast, Oprah talked about her 25 years on television and interviewing over 37,000 people. After her first year of television, she realized that being on TV was great, but she wanted it to be more. So, she decided to make it about service, and that is when she said things changed exponentially.
Uncommon Threads
One person’s way to serve is through a nonprofit called Uncommon Threads. Susan Kanoff is a fashion blogger who was previously a social worker. She tied all her strengths together and set her mission to empower women through the clothes in your closet.
Susan created an empowerment boutique where low-income women can come in for a VIP shopping experience. A stylist helps each person pick out outfits for a school conference, a job interview, some casual clothes, whatever the need is. They also offer classes and self-esteem building to these women. Other women can give by shopping online or in-store for slightly used designer clothing which help fund their efforts.
Significance
Oprah closed with saying, “When you shift the paradigm to service and you bring significance to that, success will follow you. Service plus significance equals success.”
Sew your career into a super power with three threads of success: anticipate trends and launch your ideas at 80%, establish your daily practice to build inner peace and focus on service and significance. Then success will be at hand.
