When you thought about your plans for 2022, did you include new experiences you wanted to have? Did you think about what bold new adventures you will pursue?
Experiences are valuable. Many people value experiences over material things, and for good reason. Things do not last. Experiences do. Experiences also help you grow and evolve. There is a plaque in my kitchen that says it well, “We must take adventures to know where we truly belong.”
Let me encourage you this month to either do or plan 3 new adventures.
Do something you have never done before.
Go somewhere you have never gone before.
Plan to check an item off your bucket list.
This year I decided to undertake everything I always wanted to do (within reason). If the opportunity presented itself, I would do it. If I had to seek it out, I would do it. Let me tell you some of my plans, then dream up some of your own, and share them with me on Facebook or Twitter.
Do Something You Have Never Done Before
I have always wanted to kayak on the Fox River. When I drive along I-94 between Madison and Milwaukee, I have seen kayakers on the Fox River. It looks so beautiful and peaceful. The logistics have prevented me from doing it. How would I get from point A to point B and where would I get the kayak?! My park and rec department conveniently solved that problem by offering that kayak trip this year. I signed up. The park and rec department also offered a guided kayak trip on Big Muskego Lake to see all the habitat - bald eagles, osprey, and more. I signed up.
There is a planetarium close to me. For Earth Week they are offering a sunset meditation - planetarium night hike. I signed up. What is your local community offering that you haven’t done before? Check it out, find something and sign up. I recently met a woman who told me she knows everyone in her neighborhood that has dogs. When they walk their dog, they greet other dogs and dog owners. She decided to change up her walking route and went a block over in a different direction. She met three new people who are now dear friends. Moral of the story? Change things up - go big or go small, but embark on a new adventure and see how it will change your life.
Go Somewhere You Have Never Gone Before
I love treehouses. There is a show for everything. I’m a huge fan of Extreme Treehouses or Treehouse Masters. Pete Nelson is a tree whisperer and lets the trees do the talking, then he designs and builds amazing treehouses, like this one.
They have treehouse retreats in Washington, Maine, Texas and Tennessee. It’s on my list for this year. Where have you wanted to go? Start making plans and go.
Plan to Check an Item Off Your Bucket List
One item on my bucket list is to learn to fly a helicopter. I finally realized it was not going to happen until I decided to take action on it, so I began researching it. I found a helicopter training school in Kenosha, WI. It is one time in my life that my weight gives me a discount. Because of my smaller weight, I can fly in a smaller helicopter that costs less. Whoo hooo! The overall series of trainingclasses are somewhat pricey, but the initial three-hour class includes a flight where you get to take the controls and costs less than $200. Had I not researched it, I would have always thought it was out of my budget. What have you been dreaming of? Research it and find a way to take a few steps closer.
Adventures are the memories we will talk about with our children and grandchildren. They are the proud photos we frame and put on our walls to remind us of all we have done and experienced. Be bold and go make some new memories.
